about

"Solitude" is a piano composition by composer Ryuichi Sakamoto, who recently passed away. It was featured in the film "Tony Takitani," which was based on a short story by Japanese author Haruki Murakami.

This LP includes my interpretation of this piece, played at home in a raw and loose interpretative style. But this is also a Marc Lowe original LP.

The album opens with a 10-plus minute techno/dark ambient/spoken word sound collage that includes a sample taken on the train from Kichijoji Station to Shibuya Station in Tokyo on the Inokashira line. It also features the voice of Krishnamurthi (RIP) discussing with one of his students the role of the artist in society, as well as some spoken bits from one of my YouTube talks. It is, in a sense, the centerpiece of this LP. The video is here: youtu.be/kZ87Jc2Pngc

"White Pearl" is an instrumental piano composition I can only call "Neo-classical" in style. The chords are based on my 2018 original vocal composition "Always," which was written for my daughter, who was still very little at the time. This year she turned 12, so this year's version is much more "mature" in sound and approach. This was also released separately on BandCamp as a single.

"It Had a Broken Wing" was recorded "live" at home for acoustic and voice, and the song is based on 2016's "Bird," rerecorded as "Broken Wing" in 2021 for my Tetralogy. This version is much more improvisational, the lyrics also slightly changed, and it includes some dark ambient backing with quiet beats and susurrations. Video: youtu.be/Qkl_8N9oAog

"Days Gone By" is an electronic piece from 2018 that I would also describe as "emotional." I remixed it for This Dark Shroud this year and ended up not using it on either of the new LPs, so I put it here instead. I believe it fits on this short LP quite nicely, both in terms of its sound and lyrical themes.

"Save Myself" is me remixing a cover I did of How To Destroy Angels' "A Drowning." The full vocal arrangement will be released soon on the forthcoming This Dark Shroud LP "9," and there is another, slightly different mix of it (with video) on my YouTube page.

Finally... "Non-Entity" is a b-side from Nine Inch Nails. The original, full-band version is heavy, with deep, booming drums. I had planned on doing a version with live drumming (for which I would need to book studio time to both play and record), but the other day, while setting up my keyboard to practice for an upcoming show as This Dark Shroud, a live solo version that sees Trent Reznor sitting at the piano alone with a drum machine to play and sing this composition came on, and I decided to try arranging my own piano and vocal version, except sans beats. This recording, then, like "Solitude," was performed "live" in my room and later remixed in Logic, with added ambient washes in the background. An alternate take of it is on my YouTube page, without the backing.

Thank you for your interest.
